The silver-gray rare earth metal is very soft, easily ductile and malleable. In dry air thulium is quite stable, in humid air it turns gray. At higher temperatures it burns to sesquioxide and reacts with water to form hydroxide. In mineral acids it dissolves to form hydrogen. In its compounds it is present in the +3 oxidation state, the Tm3+ cations form pastel-bluish-green solutions in water.

Application

Use in televisions (to activate phosphors on the screen surface) there are few commercial applications: 170Tm exhausted from nuclear reactors is used as a source of X-rays (gamma emitters in materials testing) Thulium-doped yttrium tantalate or lanthanum oxybromide (LaOBr) serves as a scintillator in X-ray intensifying screens or fluorescent screens in X-ray technology Thulium-doped calcium sulfate serves as a detector in personal dosimeters for measuring low radiation doses Thulium crystals can be used as active medium in diode-pumped solid-state lasers (wavelength 2 µm) with an overall efficiency of up to 10% at a maximum light output of 60 W. Thulium-doped silica glass as the active medium in fiber lasers (wavelength 2 µm) was operated with a differential efficiency of 53.2 % at a power > 1000 W. Thulium and thulium compounds are low toxic. Thulium dusts are flammable and explosive.

Extraction

After a complex separation of the other thulium companions, the oxide is reduced with lanthanum to the metallic thulium. Subsequently, the thulium is sublimed off.
